Read from June 22 to 28, 2012 — I own a copy

Although this is technically McCarthy's second novel (after The Orchard Keeper), I feel that this is really the first novel that he could call purely his own. It still shows many influences from Faulkner and O'Connor, but the McCarthy style is truly evident here for the first time - a style that will come to dominate works such as Blood Meridian; the almost apocalyptic feel of the landscape, the Gnostic and Christian symbolism, the inhuman horror encountered and perpetrated by the characters, the grammar and sentence structure that brings so much poetry to his words. Along with Blood Meridian, this is possibly one of my favourite McCarthy tales.
