I find myself liking this series more than I expected. Like the first book, it's got characters with ridiculous names like Baggybum and Snotlout and Dogsbreath. Bodily noises and boogers and belches abound. So yeah, totally a book for Boys of a Certain Age (and dads like me who remember being that age).

But here's the thing: amidst all the farting and sword-fighting, the author has managed to embed moral virtues, and slipped them so unobtrusively, that you barely realize you're being given a lesson that wouldn't seem out of place if delivered by Pa Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie.

But what you'll mostly take away from this is a funny, exciting, and cleverly-written tale of Vikings, pirates, betrayal, dangerous creatures, deadly traps, and narrow escapes.
