Orwell (or his publisher?) has a bizarre/troubling sense of propriety - all profanity has been excised, even when meaning is sacrificed ("The current London adjective, now tacked on to every noun, is ------. N doubt in time ------, like 'bloody,' will find its way into the drawing-room and be replaced by some other word" -p. 177) . A story about an assault on a prostitute, though, gets casually retold to open the book (p. 12-15).

A meta-review of Orwell's book & all of the "Down and Out in..." titles/Bette Midler movies it spawned is low-hanging critical fruit. Let's get on this, universe!
