My Thoughts
Brenda Novak’s writing is marvelous. She does a terrific job creating background information. The background information eventually builds and shapes the personalities of the characters. There is so much detail that connects to the roots of the setting.
I felt a familiarity with Whiskey Creek. As I from a small town in California, I could easily connect with the bearings of a small location. My town is only composed of 13 miles.
Gail was a great character. I liked that she worried about her PR workers. Gail was an honest, reliable, and caring person. My favorite trait of her was her determination.
Simon’s character was well brought out. The celebrates media coverage circulating around him disguised his overall goodness and vulnerability. The Hollywood world made him appear as bad boy, who was shallow and rude. It was until he left the media that the reader would be able to see Simon’s true character.
It was as if Gail revived Simon. She took away his disillusionment. He learned how to love again. Also, he actually worried about what Gail thought of him.
The one character I actually felt sympathetic towards was Sophia. I wish she didn’t stay with her abusive husband, because of her daughter. In my opinion, Sophia should build herself some courage and leave her unhealthy marriage. No women should have to deal with brutal men.
Favorite Quote
“But firemen couldn’t avoid a burning building just because it was dangerous. Someone had to rush in and look for survivors. Simon was standing in a burning building and, as belligerent, sarcastic and aloof as he could be, he didn’t know how to get himself out.”
I highly recommend When Lightning Strikes to readers looking for a summer romance book. If you’re a fan of descriptive settings and characters then this is your type of book. I’m excited for the next books in the series, which include Cheyenne and Eve’s story.
