really liked it

This book has moments of absolute perfection. Moments where the voices are new and strong and you the reader are moved, heartbroken, amused and forced to think. Sadly there are also moments where Cleave writes like a girl and it's chick lit written by a guy. At the end of the day I recommend this book, but I would have given it a 3.5 if I could have.

The moments with the son, are sometimes good, but more often precious and trying too hard. There are places that lack subtlety.

And yet, with all my criticism, I loved this book most of the time. I went through it in 2 days. You know how they say, "I laughed, I cried?" I think there were times where I did both simultaneously. (More laughter and moments that provoke thought and introspection than crying. No full on weeping.)
