This mystery had more pep to it. Gemma's elderly neighbor and friend (Erika) is a German Jew who escaped Nazi holocaust and has lived in England for over 50 years. An expensive brooch created by her father shows up in a local auction and Erika asks Gemma to look into it. This allows us to learn the back-story to Erika, who had been introduced much earlier in the series as a fringe character.

This book allows us to learn more about Gemma's thoughts about her fears of getting married and more about Emma's parents and sister. We also meet a new dog ... some massive slobbering Mastiff. There is a new dog introduced in every book of these series it seems!

I enjoyed this book very much. It looks like there are only a couple more books left in this Kincaid / James mystery series.
