really liked it
bookshelves: scifi-fantasy
Read from September 05 to 07, 2012

My enjoyment ranged between 2 and 4 stars but I feel I have to give 4 stars for the quality of the writing. This guy sure puts the science in science fiction and at times it was a little too technical for me, though the really great stories in this collection always come back to the heart. I loved the deeply existential "Tower of Babylon" and the heartbreaking "Story of Your Life". I also loved "Liking What You See," about a treatment that makes people unable to distinguish whether other people are beautiful or ugly. I had read it before and I continued to find it thought-provoking on this read.

"Understand" annoyed me - I just did not care that much about how becoming superhumanly smart gives you an obnoxious ego. "Seventy Two Letters" and "Hell is the Absence of God" seemed like interesting thought-experiments but I didn't feel engaged in them on a human level.
