This was not my favourite of Gunn's books, but it still had her signature depth and spirituality. The characters were relatable and the story was heartbreaking. The emotions were also very raw and I felt them myself as I read the book and put myself in the character's shoes. The first part of the book felt rushed, which is why I struggled with the book. It felt like the story and characters were disjointed and not introduced well, but then the book settled in halfway through and the rest of the story was great.
In this story, Erin faces the challenge of caring for an ailing father. She had never had a good relationship with her father but through these tough circumstances, she finds peace and contentment. This is a book of sacrifice, making the most of each moment, and not letting unforgiveness steal relationships and time.
