The setting and environment MAKE THIS BOOK. I honestly don't feel that connected to the characters, and I was probably almost 90 pages in before I realized that Dean was our main character. I enjoy the little kids, but they're not what kept me going through the end. Sometimes the dialogue feels unrealistic to me, as well. And with all of that being said, I still had to know what happened on the outside. It is a fun read, don't get me wrong, but if characters are something you find nonnegotiable, you might want to skip this one. Also, there are definite similarities to the Quarantine series by Lex Thomas, so check that one out if you enjoyed Monument 14. 3/5 stars.
