Not as impressed with this book as some of the reviews led me to think I would. Ron Rash's descriptions are indeed realistic as I did feel the heaviness and depression of what living in the Cove and a narrow-minded society must have felt like. His characters seemed, for the most part, believable although not much time was spent on developing them too deeply. But mostly I was disappointed in the lack of EMOTION throughout the book. The life-changing moments, the sometimes violent moments, and the romantic moments were told in such bland fashion, I often had to go back and re-read them to try and infuse some kind of feeling. I never felt the real pain Laurel must have endured to have been shunned and mistreated her whole life because of her birthmark. I never felt the rage and trauma Hank felt from having fought in a bloody war. I never felt that Walter and Laurel were truly and wholly in love. There were no real ups and downs of emotion, just a level, emotionless telling of a story.
