I have literally just finished this book after a 7 hour marathon reading session. I didn't intend on reading for that long, but got drawn into the story. I found the book to be compelling for multiple reasons.
The first is that I was a baby when the anti-war protests of the late 60's were happening. Anderson paints a very vivid picture of the political and social climate during those turbulent years. I feel like I was seeing the way things played out in a very accurate and realistic way.
The second reason is the way the narrative bounces back and forth between current day and the past. The "time travelling" is used as a great way to keep the plot moving along by revealing just enough of the underlying mystery to keep the reader invested.
Third, the book is written very tightly. There are no extemporaneous descriptions or side plots. The story moves and doesn't get diverted by romanticizing the 60's.
And finally, I really believe in the characters. They are not written to fit the stereotypes of the times. They have made errors in judgement in the past, but don't see those errors at the time. They have full faith that the decisions they are making will save the world and humanity.
I have enjoyed this book so much, that I am going to read Anderson's past works.
Highly recommended!
