really liked it
bookshelves: novella, ya, fantasy
Read from April 16 to 18, 2012

I enjoyed this one much more than the first novella! While Celaena still has her streak of arrogance, she is less overbearing in this installment, possibly because she is taken completely out of her element. I also felt she underwent more character development. She's learning to think more critically about her life and her choices and to see that there might be possibilities beyond what she has come to accept.

The plot was also less derivative than the last, and while it still wasn't a big surprise, I enjoyed the story more. Another plus was the new character, Ansel. She was much less archetypal than the Pirate Lord of the first novella, and I liked how she had her own character arc that complemented and acted as foil to Celaena's. Ansel is a side-character I'd like to know more about!
