really liked it
bookshelves: romance, 2012, audio, realistic, first-in-series
Read from June 19 to July 09, 2012

My first Nora Roberts book, to see what the fuss is about. Strong characterization, and I liked that she fleshed out all the characters, not just the main pair. The ghost story was interesting, but not exactly plot-driving. The sex scenes were painfully cliched and skim-worthy, even when that means skipping to the next track. But mostly, I loved the setting, and the OMG! accurate accents and overall quality of the voice performance on the audio. (They got the difference between Arkansas and deep South right! And the coastal variation sounded distinct too, though I don't know that one in real life to say how accurate it was.) So the fourth star is mostly for letting me soak myself in Southern and feel powerfully homesick and nostalgic. I'll definitely be reading the rest of the trilogy for that reason, but I haven't decided whether I'll read more NR after that. Strong characterization says maybe, awful sex scenes say no.
