There was a point in this book where I thought that I couldn't finish it because the subject matter was too disturbing. I did keep going though and I'm glad that I did. Sue Miller's strength as an author in my opinion, is her ability to explain the character's reasoning. In every book that I've read of hers, the main character makes some pretty bad choices and Sue tells us why. This isn't my favorite book of hers, but it is good.
