I have several recurring dreams that haunt me. One that I have at least once a month has me living in a rotten, fetid house. There's mold, insects, falling beams, trash...a vile, vile place. And according to that dream, I have lived there for some time.

I've never been able to understand why I have this dream. What does it represent? I've consulted those silly dream books, watched a few things, and thumbed through a few new agey magazines. Should I buy the pyramid power cap or not? I am leaning towards "yes."

Lucid dreaming was a skill I possessed when I was young, but it has faded with time, much like my ability to digest spicy foods properly. If you have experienced lucid dreaming, then you know the power of being able to mold complete dreamscapes and worlds to your liking.

Amnesia Moon is Lethem's lucid dream, albeit more nightmarish than you might expect. He weaves several versions of the apocalypse into a strange and surreal story that reads like an alternate universe version of Cormac McCarthy's The Road as if it was written by Phillip K. Dick. You're often on shaky ground as a reader, never quite sure of what is the true reality, and what it is leading too.

So as I sit in my rotting house, I look to my pile of moldy books. Ah, Amnesia Moon. I think I'll give it another read, at least until this dreams turns into the one where I forgot to wear pants to school.
