liked it

** spoiler alert ** A brilliant plot with a selfish, inconsiderate main character. I liked that Ruth had such trouble with readers arguing about her inexperience with certain topics, and here we have Mr Irving trying (and in my mind, failing) to write from a woman's perspective. Sex after a squash game, please.

Ultimately, the fabulous plot construction (I love all the coincidences - I don't see them as failings at all) does not defend the novel's main weakness, which is that the charming and sweet Dutch policeman gets stuck with the self centered (and dare I say it? the ruthless) Ruth, who has NOTHING going for her but those fabulous, fabulous breasts.
