This was a little longer than it needed to be but I've never been more scared reading a book. The only book that's ever scared me, in fact, is King's Salem's Lot. The formula was very Kingesque, but I don't necessarily find that to be a bad thing, as other reviewers have suggested. The characters weren't the most profound and developed but I believe they served their purpose. While the book certainly dragged in parts (a la king and his wordiness, for example), it was worth it in the end.
I've never read It (one of the few Stephen king books that I've passed up actually), and I know a lot of people are accusing Simmons of a rip off there. Perhaps I liked it as much as I did BECAUSE I've never read It. I'm not sure. I recommend this one if you're up for a fat book with a good fright factor. I'm sure I'll have some true horror lit aficionados balk over this review, but for the casual "scary book reader," Summer of Night is worth it.
