This is a fascinating look of WWII written from the viewpoint of former US secretary of state Madeleine Albright. The catalyst for this book was the discovery of her family’s Jewish heritage in the late 90s after living her entire life as a Catholic.

The story analyzes both the psychological and historical reasons Hitler and Stalin were able to take control over her country of birth, Czechoslovakia. As she tells the story, interweaving the personal with the political, the reader understands so much more about Europeans beyond the usual reports about Germans and Jews.

Prague Winter is a mesmerizing and moving memoir of political and cultural history.
