One too many?

It seems most of today's mystery writers suffer from an affliction. The inability to tell a simple story with complex characters and a good plot line and instead resort to a plethora of violent scenes and plot twists.

Yes like too many mysteries, this one suffers from too many: suspects, red herrings, plot twists, crooked cops, malignant villains, bad girls with good hearts, protagonist beatings and bloody corpses.

It's certainly not the worst example, in fact Malla Nunn is a good writer. It's just, one too many of the same thing.
