I received this book along with the first in the series for free as part of the BzzAgent program. I thought it sounded like the kind of book I'd enjoy, but it simply wasn't as good as I'd hoped. I enjoyed the period details of daily life, medicine, and even the hangman's duties. However, the mystery felt like a slowed-down Dan Brown knockoff, and as in the first book, none of the characters is particularly likable, interesting, or compelling. I found myself skimming through fight scenes which sound almost as if they're written hoping for a movie pick-up, and the whole book just seemed to drag. The translation is decent, but often the dialogue feels clunky and I think the fact that this book was first written in German had something to do with it. However, all that being said, this is a book that will definitely appeal to some readers, especially those who really liked the first book (which I rated 3 stars).

Ivan I got the book through BzzAgent too and I thought the first was better.
