Enjoyable as an audiobook but not quality with a Q. I enjoyed the giant meandering story as I enjoy most giant meandering stories, especially if there are monks, and the stonemasonry bits got my interest, too. I wanted more local color.
The main characters were so modern in their thinking and the villains so vile that I felt I was reading an old, unsophisticated fantasy rather than an historical fiction. The sexuality was gratuitous, repetitive and laughable. I mean to say that at first I grimaced and by the end of the book I was laughing.
That said, I will probably go for the sequel, as it is a pretty decent story and I don't have any other giant books lined up.
