With this brilliant book, anti-fascist Carlo Levi turned his internal exile in impoverished Basilicata into a case study for Italy's "problem of the South." Levi loves the peasantry even though he doesn't romanticize them, while he is withering in his portraits of the local gentry and their long-running feuds.
