Allie Winters dates once a month. But her monthly 'date' nights are at a club where she picks up men. Not nice men either. She wants men that will give her a 'fix', rough and unsafe but on her terms. The men she targets are cold and mean, in it for the quick, anonymous, hard sex she wants.

Men had only one use in my life and that was what the club was for.

Colin Murphy is one such man. Or so Allie thinks going by his rough demeanour. But Colin is much more than she bargained for. Though Colin's hiding a shady past and possibly involved in something illegal, he's also kind, tender and protective. Their one night together is not what Allie is used to, or what she usually wants.

This is everything that a good contemporary (erotic) romance should be. Realistic, page-turning and with the requisite happy ending. Allie and Colin are not perfect people. Colin is not a perfect romance hero. Their love-making is not always the stuff of romance novels, perfect and multi-orgasmic. Yet their relationship is realistic.

Allie is in her own mind, damaged goods. A rape victim she sees herself as tainted, not suitable for a good man. Ms Lin has done a particularly fine job of the characterisations, not just of the leads but of the secondaries. They are not painted black and white, even the rapist. There are also some secondary characters who I hope get their own stories. The strengths in Giving It Up lie in the story, the plot, the characterisations perhaps more so than the actual romance.

There are some disturbing themes, yet these scenes never felt gratuitous or the issues exploitative. Nor did it cross that line where I felt uncomfortable. This is an erotic romance, and the sex scenes are steamy, however the eroticism comes into play more in the themes it addresses.

Though I do have some quibbles they're more personal dislikes than faults with the actual writing. I have an aversion to sex-with-a-stranger in romances. But it makes sense here, it's consistent with Allie's troubled personality. (view spoiler)[And I know this is fiction but a number of STDs are contagious via oral sex. Responsible, mature, informed people don't indulge in any unprotected sex with a partner whose medical and sexual history is unknown. Okay, public health lecture over. (hide spoiler)] I would have also liked just a little more depth to their romance, to see the changes in Allie especially.

Dark, edgy yet sensual and hopeful. Raw, intelligent and well-written, with a suspense element thrown in, and an unexpected twist. This is a well-crafted contemporary romance, dealing with some distressing issues and yet written with such affecting realism that Giving It Up was very hard to put down.

Kelly Great review, Jill! This book sounds very disturbing , but well worth it.

Baba ♥♥♥ Marcus, Tyler, Tate, Dan, Ty, & Hunter I have an aversion to sex-with-a-stranger in romances.

That's exactly what I wanted to ask you, Jill, because I knew they would get it on...immediately. *cough*

Great review! I'm gonna start it tomorrow. The author provided me with an ARC. *smile*

Jill @ Dee & Kristen
Thankyou!

Thanks Kelly! There are some disturbing issues that are dealt with, but handled well. And yes it's well worth reading. I'm glad I read this really impressive debut.

Thanks Baba. And you know me too well!

I think what made it different for me from my usual aversion to sex-with-a-stranger was that it wasn't simply a lust-filled encounter Allie has with Colin. The fact that Allie has these one night stands as some sort of self-flagellation made sense.

Really looking forward to what you think of this. I did have a couple of issues. One of them is I would have liked just a little more depth to their romance, to see the changes in Allie especially. But still a very good read.

Thankyou KatLynne! I think the author has done a great job with a very sensitive issue. And especially since this is a debut.

Kristin Anders Ahem, you can write one hell of a review. And I have never typed that statement. It's informative, precise and tells me all I need to know prior to reading. You have a website?

Hi Sallie and thanks. I don't have a website, just post reviews here at Goodreads. And am a reviewer at the Romantic Historical Lovers blog and InD'Tale magazine.

Great review, by the way!

Hi Dhes, it's available on 19 June. And I'm guessing because it's a smaller press they won't have it up at Amazon till the 19th. You may still be able to get an ARC from the author at her website if you're interested.

UniquelyMoi *Dhestiny* BlithelyBookish You know, I checked and it's LooseID... they're like 8 weeks for Cherise Sinclair's books before you can get them anywhere else, so I'm wondering if it'll be the same with this one. YIKES!

I'd love an ARC, but how do you get one? Just ask? Or does she have a request button?

That is a ridiculously long time to wait for a book!
Just go to this link -

You should still be able to get an ARC, Dhes.

UniquelyMoi *Dhestiny* BlithelyBookish Thanks, Jill! I'll do that now.

Oh right! *fingers crossed*
I'm sure you'll love this, Dhes. I was impressed with the story and her writing. Although I was concerned it would be out of my comfort zone, and it wasn't. Let me know if/when you get an ARC.

KatLynne Hi Jilly & Dhes. I requested an Arc yesterday and received it this morning. I'm sure you'll get yours Dhes:)

Have you any idea what it involves, Kristin?? I really loved book #1 but I don't read bdsm and thought that her second book may be more along those lines. But it sounds so good!

It's Shelly's story. Amber's friend from the first novel. I don't *think* it has BDSM. Because Shelly's an escort and it would make sense for the hero not to treat her like others have. But maybe.

I know Amber reads those novels and likely skirts that line.

Jill Thanks Kristin! I hadn't read those excerpts. I'm so hoping this is as good as book #1!
