It took me forever to read this (mostly due to the kid, not due to the book) though when I have my attention demanded by the boy, there are those books that hold me fast and others that fall by the wayside. This one fell. It's a story about a Russian girl who escapes a Pogrom and makes her way to America. She does what she had to do to survive, and is truly a strong and tough woman. She meets some interesting people and learns a lot. She gets word from a cousin that her 2 year old daughter DID survive the pogrom and she sets out (from NYC) to return to Russia to find her daughter. I felt like there were several different stories within this one. And if I had read it more straight through, my feelings would probably be more cohesive. But regardless, just as I was getting back into the story, it ended. Bluntly.

mim Thanks for the review. This was on my long list to buy,but maybe I'll wait & get it at the library.

Chris Yes, it will be back at the Main library on Monday.
I'm the same way -- had it on my list forever, finally picked it up. I really do think I would feel better about it if I hadn't been truckin' away for a record 6 weeks, but like I said, that says something in and of itself. Still - worth a check-out.
