it was amazing
bookshelves: read-in-2006, kids-books, read-in-2007
Recommended for: maladjusted children, adults who were once maladjusted children, theatre geeks
Read in September, 2007 , read count: ten times

the first of the series that follows the life & times of the baudelaire orphans, once they have become orphans & fall into the evil clutches of count olaf. considering everything that transpires as the series wears on, it's kind of shocking to me that the books begin with mr. poe putting the baudelaires in the care of count olaf. i wonder what machinations olaf got up to in order to pull that one off. in this book, the orphans are forced to prepare dinner, sunny is stuffed inside a bird cage, & violet & klaus are forced to perform in diabolical live theatre. they also be-friend a judge whose legal library comes in quite handy. best part of this book: the children gamely making the effort to learn how to cook. the worst part: mr. poe being such a self-involved bureaucrat. was lemony snicket making a statement here about the bloated & buraeucratic foster care system? hmmmm.
