My school owns a class set of this, so I read it with an eye to using it with my sixth graders for our unit on historical fiction with medieval settings. It has an opening that will definitely catch most kids' attention (cutting someone's hand off in the first three pages will do that), and plenty of rich historical detail.

However, the intended audience is clearly older than my students, with plenty of references that I would not relish having to explain to my twelve-year-olds. I think it would be great for a high school or maybe eighth grade Language Arts or World History class.

I gave the book a three-star rating because I just couldn't connect with the main character. I never found myself really rooting for him or putting myself in his place. The historical detail is woven in so skillfully that that alone makes The Book of the Lion worth a read, though.
