I'm not too familiar with the original Conan Doyle stories but as far as I can tell the author seemed to capture the period style and tone well enough. The twists in the plot were a bit obvious and there were some distinctly modern themes and attitudes that seemed a little out of place, but I didn't have any real problem with that. My main gripe is that I thought the book dragged a bit despite its short length and fans of Holmes may feel cheated that he disappears from the plot for a significant period. All in all it's readable enough but hardly memorable.
