really liked it

As much as I enjoyed this book, and as talented a writer I think Dan Simmons is, I thought it probably could have benefitted from a ruthless final edit. I recall finding it very engaging and loving the originality of the subject matter. The character who was the most interesting to me was the chauvanist "psychic vampire" who found it impossible ever to take control of a man; he likens it to the intimacy of having to lick another man's anus! Yet he controls women at will, up to and very much including rape. It just seemed like a very authentic characterization; and feeling the authenticity of a character who is a psychic vampire...well, that's quite an accomplishment for the author. Although the full scope of the book would never fit anywhere but perhaps an HBO series, I think certain slices of it work quite well on their own.
