I'm a sucker for stories about girls disguised as boys to do something that girls aren't allowed to do, so I was excited to read this one based on the true story of Sarah Emma Edmonds who disguised herself as a boy to escape an arranged marriage and ended up fighting in the Union army. I liked all of the real Civil War photographs used throughout, and reading this book certainly got me interested in reading Sarah Emma Edmond's actual memoir, but the first person present tense writing style was hard for me to get into. The story itself was interesting, so maybe this book would appeal to a reader who likes first person present POV.

Note: I received a free eARC from Netgalley.
