From the sublime to the ridiculous, James presents a collection of brief "Facebook updates" about her family's stay in Paris. She touches upon everything from high and low French cuisine (to make your mouth water), French fashion and customs (including quirky vulgarities), her children's achievements and troubles at school and with friends, her married life, their overweight dog, the flirting butcher, the local parish with the abundant incense and the cheerful, conservative young priest, etc etc. James is a talented writer and a keen observer of life, but readers should be ready for a mixed bag. Her writing is entertaining and quirky and is just as likely to dive into the occasional profound insight as it is into an unedifying observation that you just might prefer to live without.
