really liked it
Read from June 14 to 18, 2012

I enjoyed reading this classic with the kids. It is a very simple, very lovely homage to a structured childhood. I find it remarkable how hard the kids laughed as we read the book, especially the chapter about Halloween costumes gone awry. I'm telling you they grabbed their sides, tilted their heads to the heavens and laughed laughed with somewhat maniacal joy. I have to admit, I was amused, too. Haywood has a suspenseful and fascinating way of writing about the simple joys of childhood, too. The kids have requested the second book, so we'll read that, too.

Little things I noticed along the way:
Fern has been wearing her hair in braids ever since we started reading it. Joce identifies with Ellen and likes that Betsy wore a beautiful dress every day to school. Sam likes the crossing guard. They all enjoyed going through first grade plus summer with Betsy. Angelo weaved in and out of this reading experience, but enjoyed himself when he did listen. We all loved the illustrations.

Lori One of my absolute favorite series as a child--next to Laura Ingalls Wilder. I read and re-read these "Betsy" books. I hope you enjoy!
