This book was pretty good - the story, one of those sad ones, but good to read. I only can't give it 5 stars because at more than one time I was confused out of my gourd. I think the author tries to be mysterious and leave a lot open to you going, "Oh! I know what happened!" but fails at times. There were several places I had to read two and three times to get that "oh, ok."

While the reading itself was easy, the book was written in first person of two characters. It was often impossible to distinguish between the two and I think that the form (style?) of writing did not reflect how these two characters would have told the story, aside from one's constant addressing of, "My Boy."

But those points aside, the book was good. It really gave me some thought about living in the rural Midwest during the Depression. The pigs gave me a whole new understanding about one aspect, in particular.
