A supervolcano beneath Yellowstone Park erupts. Alex lives in Iowa. Iowa (and most other parts of the U.S.) are blanketed with ash. Alex's mother and father and sister had just left to visit relatives in Indiana, leaving Alex home alone. Alex makes his way through the chaos to Indiana to find his family.
The book is incredibly violent. There are kind people along the way. But there is also killing, hacking, murdering, rape, cannibalism, etc.
