I'm giving this book one star each for: pirates, ninjas, mimes and the apocalypse.

I'm impressed that Nick Harkaway was able to blend all of those elements together into a novel that didn't seem completely ridiculous, but somehow he managed. Don't get me wrong -- the book was funny. But in the weird Gone-Away World that he's created, it all sort of made sense.

I understand Michael's point that this novel is really two different books, but it didn't bother me in the same way. The first half of the book wasn't quite as engaging as the second part, but I feel like it was necessary for the overall story.

All in all, a good read. A bit longer than necessary, but enjoyable. Recommended, especially if you like Douglass Coupland -- there's something about Harkaway's style that really reminds me of him.
