A gentle retelling -- adaptation, really -- of Rapunzel's story. Though an element here and there bothers me a little, Dokey's prose is excellent and overcomes any minor complaints. She has a mild style that effortlessly accomplishes the task of moving a plot along. Her metaphors are always apt and original, descriptions contain exactly the proper amount of detail to set a scene, but not interrupt the pace of a short book, and there is an overall softness to her sentences that makes reading Golden a delight. The conversations between Rapunzel and the soft-spoken sorceress are one of the highlights of the book. With every exchange, each character grows a little more until they're fully alive in the reader's eye. It was difficult to put this book down, and indeed, I only did so twice.
