I think that this novel was the best of the trilogy. Partly because the characters have become more sympathetic over time, and I think partly because this book had much more of a plot than the first and most of the second novel.

Admittedly, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the plot as much if I hadn't spent the first two novels learning about these characters... and I did feel that the first book was pretty lackluster in terms of plot, and the characters were rather two dimensional. However, the second book did a much better job of fleshing the characters out, and in the third novel we get to see them "in action" so to speak. Honestly, this was a really well written book.

I especially enjoyed the afterward, and the scenes from the first novel rewritten to take Christian's point of view.
