In the Woods (Dublin Murder Squad, #1)

A very dark novel with a compelling and damaged lead detective- yep my favorite kind of mystery. I found the story complex and completely convincing. There were a few little things that bothered me, in particular the way the narrator talked to the reader, hinting at disasters to come and ruining the flow by pointing out that a decision was a big mistake before we even know what it was, or that everything would go wrong from here before I could enjoy the moment.( I prefer to see things play out and make my own call) but I nitpick. The characters were wonderful, fully formed and very real. I believed the relationship between Rob and Cassie and it's disintigration rang true. I know a lot of people hated the ending. I didn't. I think in the real world, some mysteries are never solved, people get away with a lot, and some people never recover from betrayals. I worry about detective Rob Ryan, and have to remember that he is not actually real.
