What I Did
by Christopher Wakling
by Christopher Wakling
A father gets accused of child abuse after someone has seen him hit his six-year old son. That is the beginning of a nightmare for the Wright family. Social services come into action to question young Billy what happened but his answers are so ambiguous and evasive that they don't trust the situation. The entire novel is written from Billy's point of view, which works wonders because otherwise the book might have become far too heavy. With innocent and sweet Billy as main character Wakling gives his book a light and funny touch. Funny because of the plenty misunderstandings between children and adults and because Billy is such a wiseacre he thinks he knows the meaning of certain words and terms. His elaborations on several subjects are hilarious. The message of the book is rather ironical; everyone involved wants the best for Billy but they are not able to communicate with him. In the end the Wright family (notice their family name) even threatens to collapse under the gigantic pressure. And yet the adult characters weren't entirely convincing so I got stuck on three stars with a bonus in mind for Billy.
