Loosely based on a Russian folktale about a snow child who comes to life, Ivey's novel features a middle-aged couple from Pennsylvania who homestead in Alaska in the 1920s.

Their snow child arrives the night after they make and dress a snowman. Skittish and quiet, she arrives with the snow and disappears with spring. Their friends and neighbors, George and Esther and their youngest son Garrett never see the girl and don't believe her real. As the girl grows up, she acknowledges Jack and Mabel as her parents, as they have always been there for her--and she is the child they have always hoped for.
