Read from June 10 to 16, 2012

As an exercise of creating an interesting world/set of worlds, it's definitely a success. The discussions of terraforming and the choice of how humans have evolved made for intriguing consideration. But the plot itself is pretty weak, especially given how long the book is. Climatic elements are rushed and handled offscreen in a matter of paragraphs and the sense of tension is rarely there (except for one fantastic sequence in the middle of the book). Overall, I'd say if this was a 300 page book, it'd be worth it, but at almost 600 it may not be worth the time investment.
