As long as there have been wars, there has been heartbreak. In 'The Spanish Road' by Anne Kaye, for Javier and Gaspard there's a special kind of heartbreak which even time cannot dissipate.

Javier is a very young, idealistic Spanish soldier, eager to serve and wanting to do everything right. Javier has discovered early that he's attracted to men. Since loving a man is out of the question and so is deceiving a woman, he decides to remain celibate. But war has a way of changing things. Not knowing where you will be or if you will even be alive from one day to the next, gives life a greater sense of urgency. People do things that they would not normally do for fear of never experiencing them at all. Gaspard and Javier's relationship is begotten in this kind of atmosphere, but that doesn't mean that it isn't real. Javier loves Gaspard and treasures the memories they make together, even though he knows pain will surely follow.

Gaspard wants Javier as soon as he meets him. Normally, he would have had more time to weigh the situation, but he realizes that it's now or never. He chooses to pursue Javier even though he knows it's totally impractical. He wants a chance to love this beautiful boy who makes his heart ache so very much; times which will sustain him when Javier is gone.

'Beyond the Spanish Road' is a historical romance written in lyrical prose which gave it a special charm. I became part of the story, feeling like I was watching a biographical presentation, in Javier's voice, exemplifying all of his charm, love, trials, fears, and faithfulness. It's different, but it's simply beautiful. I'd recommend this story to anyone who enjoys historical romance full of angst, love, disappointment, perils of war, heartbreak, and eventual resolution. Thank you, Annie, for the bittersweet tale of love and loss.
