A good book club read, I enjoyed this book after discussing it more than when reading it. This is an unusual love story, related through others, about a man who moved from Burma to the US as a young adult. His adult daughter is looking for him several years after he simply vanished and she ends up in his home village in Burma, hearing a very detailed account of her father's childhood from someone she doesn't know. It is this story that makes up the bulk of the book; while interesting, I felt like there was so much we didn't know about him and huge questions remained. However, the most significant questions prompted a lively and thought-provoking discussion at book club and for that reason, I would give this 4 stars for a book club book. If, like me, you hope to learn much about the history and culture of Burma, however, this is not the best choice.
