I think Shine is another one of those important novels that all teens should read -- and even adults. It covers so many taboo themes and teaches so much, without being overly grisly or making you feel like you're being lectured.
I really liked how real the characters' reactions were and how true to life the dialogue was.

I knew right away that though Shine is YA, Myracle took great care in making the story as realistic as possible. ...Myracle depicts the dangers of meth use without being preachy, and also highlights the importance of not hiding the bad things that happen to you.
I really liked how real the characters' reactions were and how true to life the dialogue was.
Each character was expertly crafted; as Cat talks to each person potentially involved in Patrick's beating, you learn more and more about that character, and begin to see each one in a whole new light -- even the ones you initially thought were horrible people.
