Kim was right about this being a bit flat next to "Ship Breaker." Still, I found the bleak situation and the iron will of the characters in the face of constant moral uncertainty well-executed. Bacigalupi's writing is stronger than most popular YA authors, but I think the main problem in this story was the 4 narrators. The best of these was the conflicted soldier, and the female main character could have been a boy and the story wouldn't have changed a bit. All the same, I find the world after the rise of the seas fascinating and read through the 400 pages quickly.
