This book is one of the very few books I remember reading as a kid for fun (I didn't read that much back then) and I remember it scaring the crap out of me. To the point that I found myself listening to Yanni's "One Man's Dream" on repeat just to be able to finish it.
I was excited about re-reading it to see if I reacted the same way as an adult now that I am an avid reader and I can happily report that it still had that perfect eerie feel. I wouldn't say it scared me because I'm older now and have grown somewhat immune to fear factor, but I won't pretend it didn't have me looking in the mirror worried I might see a ghost behind me. And I loved that about it.
The one thing that disappointed me was that I'd read this book in middle school before cell phones and email existed so it was confusing to me when mentions of these things kept popping up. Turns out this version was an updated release from last year whereas the one I'd read as a child was written in 1974. I'm not really sure I like the idea of great books being revised to fit the time. It didn't feel necessary to me and I would have preferred to be reading the original.
