Read in June, 2012

I got this book at Book Expo America 2012 and was very excited about it. Read it on the plane home.

But a lot of pretty sentences strung together does not a book make.

Yellow Birds has all the right blurbs, all the right marketing behind it, all the right people saying the right things. When it comes out in the fall I'm sure it will get all the right reviews. The author clearly knows the right people who know the right people. That is okay, it is just part of the world we live in, whether it's books or not.

But the fact is this book just isn't very good.

There is barely any plot, barely any character development. Want pretty references and analogies to the desert? There is plenty of that.

This book will succeed because it relies on archetypes that readers are familiar with: war is bad, leaders are dumb, life is sad and violent. this book adds nothing new, it could be set anywhere, at any time, it is that much of a blank slate. What a lost opportunity. This book will probably sell, but it won't last.
