Kill Decision
by Daniel Suarez
by Daniel Suarez
** spoiler alert **
Suarez continues his twisting, rough cut writing style in a nice follow up to Freedom. This time its autonomous drones as the enemy. The ending was fine but not completely satisfying. Suarez leaves lots of holes in the plot for us to fill in, but that part of his style. I do however have a few quibbles.
Mention is made more than once of basic drones with exposed or easily accessible circuit boards acting in a swarm but no mention is made of fighting them with electromagnetic pulse weapons. I would have expected a mention even as a way to dismiss them (not portable, high power requirements, whatever.) An electromagnetic pulse destroys circuit boards and while items can be hardened against EMP there was no indication that these drones were.
Also, we never really figure out who the bad guys are. While there is some satisfaction in the end, it's not really enough.
As I said, these are quibbles. The book was terrific.
