Mary Bowser was a freed slave who spied for the Confederacy. Leveen uses the few facts that are known about her and other southerners who were secretly working for the Union as a skeleton for this fictional story. The way the slaves are treated is too good to be true, and Leveen apparently decided the story wouldn't be compelling enough unless Mary Bowser singlehandedly saved the Union and got to meet President Lincoln to boot. Those are minor quibbles, though. Half of a star is for the cover alone; it's the reason I bought the book.
