bookshelves: dystopian, ya

And now I have to wait a year to find out what happens! Crap. I thought that this was a worthy follow-up to Divergent and I probably most enjoyed delving deeper into the workings/customs of the city's factions. As was the case with Divergent, the action of this book felt very cinematic which is not surprising. Most of the dystopian YA fiction that I read shares this trait and I believe that is part of the genre's appeal. As teachers, we often ask students to allow text to become a "movie in your mind" and the way Ms. Roth writes certainly lends itself to that description. My only quibble Witt this book is the constant "I trust you/I don't trust you" relationship between Tobias and Tris. I'm sure part of that stems from the lack of resolution that many "middle" books of a trilogy employ, but it got to be a little heavy-handed for me. All in all, this was a great read and I highly recommend it for fans of Divergent. This is NOT a stand-alone title, so reading the first book is a MUST.
