First, it must be said that Sara Zarr can write. I read so much YA fiction that has a good plot but the writing is mediocre. Now so with Zarr -- her sentences are beautifully crafted and her stories break your heart.

This is the story of two girls -- the first, Mandy, is pregnant with no place to go -- the second, Jill, is still trying to recover from the sudden death of her father in an automobile accident. When Jill's mother decides to handle her grief by adopting a baby, she finds Mandy. But Mandy hasn't been entirely truthful to Jill's mother, and Jill is both suspicious and resentful of Mandy.

The story could be melodramatic, but it's not because Zarr is a magnificent writer. It is one of my favorite books for 2012.
